Toyota Working on Electric Cars That Charge in Minutes for 2022

The Tesla Model 3 is one of the hottest selling cars in the world, but it still remains a fact that modern electric cars have two big drawbacks. One: they cannot go as far as a petrol-powered car and Two: they take a much, much longer time to charge up their batteries than it does to fuel up. While there are technological advancements slowly coming to plug these holes, Japanese carmaker Toyota may have found a solution that addresses both issues.

According the Japanese newspaper Chunichi Shimbu, in an article by Reuters, Toyota is preparing a new line of electric cars for 2022 that would use a completely new battery technology. This new line of Toyota cars would use “solid-state” batteries, a relatively new battery tech where the cell’s electrolyte is solid instead of liquid, to replace the current cars’ lithium-ion battery tech. Solid state batteries not only increases efficiency and the speed of charging, but also reduces the batteries’ volatility. According to Chunichi Shimbun, these new batteries could fully charge in two or three minutes, compared to 20 or 30 with current lithium-ion tech.

There are a few more things to consider, of course. The year 2022 is still a long way away, and in that time, more technology will have cropped up to replace or possibly better the current battery tech. There’s also the chance that Toyota’s plans fall apart because of the cost put into scaling back on a new, untested battery type, long before they’re ever put into action if these reports are true.

Still, the promise of an electric car with a battery that could charge in minutes is certainly a promising one, and it appears that the tech to enable it is in fact possible.
