Spreading the MERDEKA Love!
Malaysians, we all look forward to this day; a day to celebrate our independence and to reunite amongst each other! In conjunction with the upcoming Merdeka day, here’s an overview related to Merdeka & cars!
VPCM (Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia) recently launched their limited edition 60th Merdeka Edition Beetle during the Volkswagen Fest 2017 at the Setia City Convention Centre. In commemoration with Merdeka day, the car even comes with the number “60” emblazoned at the sides and front. With only 16 exclusive units available, price starts from RM 136,888. The car comes in 2 colours; Pure Silver and White Silver. Killing two birds with one stone, VPCM also unveiled the new Jetta ALLSTAR during the event.
Remember back in 2014, Businessman, M.Kandapan took his patriotism to another level by spending RM 15,000 to decorate four cars with the Jalur Gemilang and stickers? In an interview with the sundaily.my, he said, “As a Malaysian, I do not mind spending money every year to brighten the celebration. I am not seeking popularity, decorating cars is my passion. I have been doing it for the past 12 years.” We do hope this Merdeka spirit continues!
Last year, a group of friends started the #Merdeka2015 which brings people from all races and backgrounds to celebrate Merdeka & cars. 40 cars joined in the convoy, carrying the Jalur Gemilang for 26.5km from Kinrara towards Putrajaya. According to automotive journalist, Qhalis Najmi Shafie, Merdeka simply means “Freedom”. For petrolheads, this means freedom to express and it is a duty as youths to continue this passion and culture the right way, without being “Car-sist”. This also translates to; if your car is stock or modified, it doesn’t matter! This definitely smells like teen spirit.
As the Merdeka day draws closer, you can also expect car companies carrying on different Merdeka promotions and events. Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has also announced on their Merdeka rebates of up to RM 10,000. This includes the Outlander, Triton and ASX. They are also throwing in free gifts for minimum spenders on car servicing. Mitsubishi, you can thank us later ;)
Kuching on the other hand, will be organizing yet another “Merdeka Auto Carnival” this year. Last year, the event was a success as 200 cars convoyed from Giant Hypermarket Kota Padawan to Serian and ended at the flag-off point. Organized by the Sarawak Auto Enthusiast Society (SAS), they believe the event will spread the Merdeka spirit and is a great platform for youths to exchange knowledge and understanding amongst each other. Giant Hypermarket also collaborated on this project as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Project.
So, what have you got under your sleeves for the upcoming Merdeka celebration? Have fun and most importantly, celebrate the day with pride and joy!
