Should I Become An Automotive Technician?
Some of us might have grown up harboring a childhood dream to work with cars. What’s not to love about them as a kid? A little boy may have watched his father tinker under the hood on weekends, and dreamed to one day be able to do that too. A teenager might have developed a love for fast cars, and had a burgeoning interest in the technical and mechanical aspects of how engines work. Or perhaps you have a natural affinity for fixing things, and love the challenge of solving mechanical problems.
If you can relate to any of these things, a career in the automotive industry sounds promising for you!
Why Your Passion Should Be A Profession
1. Job reliability
Economic downturns may affect car sales, but vehicles will always require professional maintenance and repair. Regardless of the state of the economy, people will always need cars that run well. The number of vehicles on the road is expected to continue rising, which means more technicians will be needed to perform basic maintenance and repair.
2. Demand for skilled professionals
The automotive industry has evolved a lot technologically, where cars of the 21st century are sophisticated computerised machines, controlling everything from engine parameters, anti-lock braking systems, automatic transmissions to entertainment systems. This has transformed regular mechanics into skilled auto technicians, dealing with intricate aspects of modern vehicle systems. As global car production increases, the demand for highly skilled technicians to service these complex vehicles are increasing too.
3. Global job mobility
Fancy experiencing life in another country? Many first world countries list automotive specialists as migration occupations in demand. Building a career in the automotive industry may be the first step towards creating a different life for you and your family.
4. No lengthy graduate degrees incurring massive student debt
Many professional jobs require years of tertiary education, incurring huge debts which would take years of work to repay. In contrast, tradesmen such as automotive technicians only need a diploma certification, and often wind up with very manageable student debt because they learn a lot of their skills on the job. The on-the-job training automotive technicians receive makes you very employable and opens up lots of options, even during the early stages of your career.
5. Job satisfaction
There’s a high degree of self-satisfaction in using your skilled expertise to make the quality of people’s lives better everyday. Being an automotive technician may have its own challenges, but you won’t find yourself bored, sitting at a desk doing solitary paperwork from 9-5.
