How To Dress For A Long Trip

Whether you’re the driver or the passenger, what you wear during your trip can either make it or break it! You don’t want an annoying itch from that little tag at the back of your T-shirt or to feel constricted and trapped from a too-tight pair of pants. But you don’t wanna be wearing your nasty 10-year-old pyjamas either, no matter how comfortable they are! So here are a few tips and tricks to help you look fabulous while staying comfortable on your journey.

The number one easiest go-to outfit for a long journey? Sweats!

How many times have we seen celebs rocking track pants on a day out? Hey, if they can do it, so can we! Nowadays, sweats are actually pretty expensive with big brands rolling ‘em out but this is something you should definitely invest in whether you’re a guy or a girl. And remember, matching the top and the bottom is in, no matter how much your heart says no. Don’t just throw on your ratty workout clothes, you want something that’s got more finesse.

Some tips: Think really hard about the material you’re comfortable with – sporty spandex or breathable cotton or something fluffy, everyone is different and you’ll want something that makes your skin feel like it’s being buttered. Also, layering is key!

Did I just say layering? In Malaysia?? Yes! Get a jacket that has a front zipper – with the constant hopping on and off an air-conditioned vehicle and transitioning to Malaysia’s hot, hot sun, this feature gives you easy adaptability. Wear a comfy tank, T-shirt or cropped top underneath.

Can’t go wrong with shorts and flip flops

Guy or girl, you can’t go wrong with the Malaysian classic. Flip flops can easily be thrown off. You can go fancy or classic with different designs and patterns and materials to match your personality (but let’s keep the crocs off the list, shall we?). Slip on shoes are great too! And hey, shorts are just comfy – not to mention, pretty airy! Just remember to keep it loose and easy. Save the hot pants for when you’ve arrived at your destination.

That hair though…

If you’ve got long hair (and this applies to everyone!), have multiple scrunchies stocked up in your glove compartment. There’s no way that anyone’s hair stays superstar-perfect after hours in a car, no matter how much you try to puff it up. Messy buns are always great and pony tails will never go out of style. If you’re feeling adventurous go for a braid!

Here’s a good tip though, if you don’t wanna tie up your hair; use dry shampoo! It’s a modern-day beauty savior. Spritz some on halfway through the drive and you’ll keep it looking alive and bouncy. It’ll remove any dryness or oiliness – just do some research and experimenting before taking one on a road-trip, though!

Other road trip must-haves

You’ve got water, snacks and tissue, right? And you’ve definitely got your car phone charger! Add to that lip balm, sunscreen and an umbrella (or two) so that you constantly stay protected from the elements. Don’t forget your shades, they’ll definitely up your style! A first aid kit would be helpful too, better safe than sorry. And here’s my personal favorites: pillows and a blanket. Not for the driver but for everyone else! Because a happy car-full of people equals a stress-free driver.

There’s a huge difference between being fashionable and having style. At the end of the day, don’t bother with what’s in season. Take a few tips but you don’t need to change out your wardrobe each time there’s something new out there. Instead, create your own little personal road-trip style. Build on it over the years. Something distinct, where when your friends and family see you all dressed up in it, they’ll know it’s road trip time. Something memorable, something that makes people go, “Oh yeah, it’s time to get drivin’!”
