All abuzz over women’s safety

THE CARing Roadshow aimed at raising awareness for safer public spaces for women, especially in carparks and on the road, was launched at the Bangsar Shopping Centre, Kuala Lumpur recently.
The event by VenusBuzz’s CARing Project was jointly launched by VenusBuzz managing director and founder Anna Chew and celebrities Julie Woon, Lavin Seow and Zain Saidin. They all later took part in a tyre-changing exercise.
The roadshow will be held until October. The next one will take place at e@Curve from June 17 to 19 followed by other major shopping centres in the Klang Valley.
The programmes are held together with sponsors from Honda, Bayer, The Otomotif College (TOC), Goodyear and Joey Yap Research International.
The roadshows will showcase auto workshops conducted by TOC, personal safety demos by self-defence experts, child-safety for parents and segment on road safety for children.
Visitors to the event can participate in the tyre-changing challenge and stand a chance to win new tyres from Goodyear.
They will also receive exclusive VenusBuzz CARing kit that comes with important auto assist numbers, essential carpark safety checklist and goodies from GBA Corporation.
Chew said it was time for women to stop complaining and take control of their own safety. She said they had rated more than 20 car parks and talked to the management to make improvements.
“The feedback we received on the carparks were that there were not enough security guards on patrol, dimly-lit parking lots and the absence of special parking bays for women or the disabled.
“Common mistakes made by women are that they are not alert of their surroundings and in sensing signs of dangers.
“According to the Government Transfor-mation Programme roadmap, 70% of street crimes in Malaysia occur in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang and Johor while 87% of the victims are female,” she said.
Chew added that this was the first phase of the project and the second phase would focus on safety in office buildings.
“We want to provide women with both information and opportunity to gain practical knowledge on auto safety and maintenance,” she said.
