IKEA Is Exploring The World Of Self-Driving Technology

IKEA, yes...THAT IKEA, is diversifying itself from affordable furniture place with great meatballs, to exploring the various avenues of the self-driving car. You heard right! From healthcare to hospitality, the Swedish furniture giant is now preparing itself to take on the world with self-driving technology.

IKEA, via its SPACE10 lab, will be exploring the various prototypes of autonomous car designs that could one day drive the future of the world’s most basic sectors. In the concept project called Spaces on Wheels, IKEA plans to adapt to the change and constant new developments in self-driving technology to help build and develop the world.

"We’ve designed seven autonomous vehicles as a visual exploration of how fully autonomous vehicles could one day enable a more fulfilling, everyday life," writes IKEA’s blog.

There are 7 designs that IKEA has come up with to cover almost all of our daily sectors, from healthcare to hospitality, work and play, as well as giving us a peek into the future of a redefined autonomous mobile space. SPACE10 has also come up with an app which uses Augmented Reality (AR) to stimulate what each of the designs would feel and look like.

"Ultimately, Spaces on Wheels invites more people to envision the profound paradigm shift the development of self-driving cars could have on our everyday lives," explains IKEA in the blog.

These 7 designs include:

1. Office on Wheels

This design aims to eliminate time lost in daily commutes to work in order to increase productivity and provide a more relaxed professional setting.

2. Cafe on Wheels

This design is an innovative solution to isolation providing a moving area where people can catch up and reconnect without interrupting their busy schedules.

3. Healthcare on Wheels

This design comes complete with a drone ambulance and enables medical care that comes to the patient, not the other way around.

4. Farm on Wheels

This design brings fresh food to urban communities who have limited access to higher-end produce stores, feeding those who need it the most and expanding farmers 'markets.

5. Play on Wheels

This design merges transport and entertainment through the inclusion of novel windows that provide augmented reality games and educational tools that can be adapted to cater to a passenger's surroundings.

6. Hotel on Wheels

This design lets you travel to your destination while you sleep comfortably in a room that features all the perks found in today's static hotel rooms.

7. Shop on Wheels

This design is a mobile store for those who want to shop without the hassle of getting to a mall. Now retail therapy comes to your doorstep.

For now, IKEA is hoping that the project will inspire a conversation about the possibilities of self-driving technology and how it can help to advance and help make the world a better place.

"We’d like to make more and more people think about the vast promises surrounding what fully autonomous electric vehicles could enable: from increased safety on roads to better health in cities, greater convenience, more efficiency, reduced environmental impact and increased mobility for more people, we aim to elicit a broader dialogue on how we should perceive and design these spaces," read's IKEA's blog.
