There was a time where jet engine powered cars are everything. Everything about the trial of jet engine powered cars are associated with the Chrysler Turbine cars. The automobile is simply powered by gas turbine engines, which is similar to a jet aircraft engine. Turbine engine is powerful and definitely packs a punch, but the application is limited for automobiles. Let’s put it this way; we almost had jet-powered cars.

In 1960’s, Chrysler developed a jet-powered car, however, the government began to interfere on this idea and development. Chrysler began researching on turbines in the late 1930’s for both military and civilian use. Most engineers agreed that jet turbines would not be suitable for car usage because their engines could never be made small enough to fit under the car’s hood. Although the car was successfully built, there were some drawbacks such as; slow throttle response and bad fuel economy.

Many other car manufacturers began experimenting on jet engines in cars and has never entirely died down. The obsession will always be there, but it is highly unlikely that car manufacturers these days will continue working on jet-engine powered vehicles. Many are now moving towards electric vehicles instead.
